All narrative art that is not entirely self-referential must, it seems
to me, "exploit" someone. It is even possible to exploit one's own
fortunes and misfortunes to manipulate the emotional and intellectual
responses of others. Isn't that what artists do: organize symbols and
signs to manipulate the emotional and intellectual responses of others?
They operate on a continuum that includes the Aboriginal Musician, the
Shaman, the Prophet, the Salesman, the Architect, the Advertising
Director, the Teacher, the Polititian, the Pornographer, the Puppeteer,
the Painter, and the Poet.
We will just have to learn to live with the shame.
Mark
