Fowles' novel (which I'm currently enjoying) feels like a fine pre-cursor to
M&D, what with the period wit, anachronism galore--airplanes, Proust
mentions, e.g., fowles writing a victorian novel but with a 20th century
sensibility. etc.
there are other reverbs, namely to this reader to Melville's Pierre.
Of course, we all know Fowles gave a very favorable blurb for M&D
rich
