NP: Eagles v. Bears

Classic "cold war" match-up today in the NFL, as the American
football season winds toward a climax, and two great American
cities- Philadelphia (Eagles) and Chicago (Bears) are featured.
The game is being played in the "Windy City"- Chicago, at the
usually frozen Soldiers Field, which seems to suit the Eagles
who have the advantage for the moment, 26-17.

Much of the east coast, where I am, is under a winter storm,
the first major threat of snow in the New York Metro area
this winter. Sitting here facing west, towards Chicago, it
occurs to me that if one were standing on the "West Line"
and likewise facing toward the setting sun, the "eminent
Philadelphean" would be to the right-hand side, which would
make the name Benjamin- one who sits at the right hand
side of The Father- appropriate, while Washington, at Mt.
Vernon, would be to the left-hand, or "sinister" side.

Facing east, of course, would reverse this relationship.

I see The Eagles have scored again, and with time running
out are probably going to win, which makes the cold war
analogy more apt, I guess.

My pick for the Super Bowl is the St. Louis Rams, but with
all the post-911 patriotism in full swing, it promises to be
an even more intolerable spectacle than usual. Maybe one
of the featured teams will steal a play from the Enron
playbook and try an end run.
