In the Back Room's back room, it's not at all clear which
is real and which the imitation. Both are dear, it occurs to
me. This seems like another one of Pynchon's strained metaphors
mixing the purely material or physical with the bio-logical.
Ben Franklin's Scythe is nothing less than a tool for making
a cut or distinction between those two interdigitating realms.
High presto-digitation/ low puns- it's the 'ol far from equilibrium
shuffle.
The cut in the energy flow- where between the two
terminals it's made- is largely arbitrary, but required,
in order to avoid an infinite regress.
Beggng the question:
Who's the effigy maker's maker?
Or is this a topless local?
