"If individualism is the product of the Enlightenment,
then for Morrison it is also the product of what she
calls the Enlightenment's 'twin, born at the same
time, the Age of Scientific Racism.'  She notes that
'David Hume, Immanuel Kant and Thomas Jefferson, to
mention only a few, had documented their conclusions
that blacks were incapable of intelligence' (1987b,
108).[...]  Locke's Second Treatise decalres that
slaves are 'property' and thus akin to 'inferior
Creatures' that are 'common to all Men.'" (p. 84)
