How about something on the history of the colonial period. What factors went
into the development of the America we have today in all its mystifying
complexity for good and ill, brilliance and silliness?. I think we could all do
with some knowledge not based on right wing or left wing fantasies but on the
work of professional historians as synthesized by a fellow historian who is also
quite a good writer.

The book I recommend is Gordon S. Wood, The Radicalism of the American
Revoluntion.

Wood like everyone else has his veiwpoint but I guarentee no one will find him a
waste of time.

Or as an alternative we could read Howard Zinn and Peggy Noonan.
