I think Vineland is a sort of foreword the rediscovery of tenderness in M&D.
There is a shift in Pynchon´s leverage, he seems, in fact, more concerned
with transmission of sentiment than with execution of craftsmanship.
In music, the finest execution is that which permits a full and nervous
transferrence of emotion--lucklessly, Pynchon does not attain this effect
homogenously throught the novel, and it comes through as being an irregular
work. As is, in many ways, COL49.
However, Vineland sets a precedent in amplyfing Pynchon´s scope, in
anchoring a separate maturity that is consummated to near-perfection in M&D.
All that said, I prefer GR and V.
Immature me? Possibly, yes.
