I just re-read the scene in the German translation to make sure I won't miss
anything, and I realized that Gershom is being served by Martha too. In a
normal master & slave relation we could expect Washington sending Gershom to
the kitchen for sweets as well as for the pipes. But we get no other picture
of Gershom doing some house-slave "work" apart from this job of fetching the
pipes.
