Highly recommend Hugh Kenner's treatise on the mechanization of the arts
among other things. The book mentions Vaucanson on a number of occasions (in
fact, the cover illustrated by Guy Davenport, features our infamous duck).
Seems Kenner was orbiting the same literary minefield as Gaddis, who
eventually took his life-long project and turned into a short novel, Agape
Agape before he passed away.
The book is very funny if a bit over my head at times and it proves once
more how close the parallel worlds of Pynchon and Gaddis really were.
