er in case this wasn't clear to everybody i do not condone all that is
said by mr goad. i think he also has a weird sense of humor, which i
might want to emphasize seen how things go on this list (yeah there
is wicked humor in the world. you don't have to find it funny though).
but beynod his shock statements he has a lot of things to say,
including on race relations in the US. for that i would recommend the
talk he had with darius james in Transition mag n. 73. He talks more
seriously in there and you won't have to get past the macho bullshit
talk. excerpt of a review

"So it was bracing to read "Pale Face, Red Neck," a conversation between
 black writer Darius James and Jim Goad, author of The Redneck Manifesto.
  We finally have a real dialogue, refreshingly without cant.

The Redneck Manifesto, writes James, "levels the playing field, attacking
the often nonsensical and circular nature of 'racial dialoguing' in America,
and pointing out that poor whites are 'victims' of the `devil whyteman' [sic]
and his greedy corporations as much as anyone else. After all, trailer parks
 are just rural housing projects." Goad (an unabashed "class" man against the
"race" professionals) thinks that poor urban blacks and poor rural whites belong
to the same underclass and would make natural allies. But the "redneck" has become
the last acceptable target of prejudice. The blacks and whites who have real common
interests and problems to solve are kept from joining forces by politically fomented
race issues. He's scornful of the kind of race discussion that refers to "the white community . . .
it's as insulting as saying, 'well black America thinks . . . 'What the hell is black America?"

The best thing in the dialogue is Goad's delight in trashing sentimental pieties of race and class.
 What's so hard to understand about hatred? he asks. The brutal politics of post-Civil War Reconstruction
 was a sure formula to make poor whites and blacks hate each other; they were in a cockfight. Jim Goad
 loathes the attempts to talk about race. It's always a top-down enterprise, he says, white liberals
 and intellectuals of color dictating the terms of the debate. "There's so much hostility in white
 American liberalism that it can't be motivated by compassion. It has to be motivated by the desire to control. . .
 The antifascists I've talked to tend to be unbending, unflinching, and intolerant of any dissent, anything
 which might complicate the simplistic, moralistic way they look at things."

 i really think he's not as bad as he wants us to think but well,
nobody has to agree. you talk about macho attitude, it is a well-known
postcolonial theory trope that machism is also a resistance reflex in
all oppressed/colonized communities, from the northern ireland
catholics to the african americans.
