Dominion of the King of Great Britain and Ye Continent
of North America" (1715), a.k.a. the "Beaver Map" ...
"Herman Moll (d.1732) was born in the Netherlands and
moved to London about 1680. He began his career as an
engraver and earned renown as the foremost map
publisher in England in the early eighteenth century.
Moll was one of the first mapmakers to use London as
the prime meridian for longitude. British authorities
used his 'Map of North America' and his 1715 'A New
and Exact Map of the Dominions of the King of Great
Britain on ye Continent of North America' (or 'Beaver
Map') to counter French claims to territory in North
America. Throughout his career he published many maps
of high quality covering all parts of the world."

"Herman Moll's so called 'Beaver Map' is one of the
most famous and important 18th Century maps to show
the British colonies and claims in North America.
Published shortly after the War of the Spanish
Succession, it is a vivid counter blast to the
territorial claims made on the maps of French
cartographer, Guillaume De l'Isle. A wealth of
descriptive detail provides information on such
politically important topics as the British alliance
with the Iroquois and the French fishing rights in
Newfoundland. There is also a fascinating description
of the postal service throughout the colonies
providing details of mail routes and delivery times.
There are several inset maps including an important
one of the Carolinas. This combines information from
several earlier maps of Carolinas resulting in a
highly detailed map of the region which is of
particular importance for its information concerning
settlement. The main pictorial feature of Moll's
splendid map, and the reason for its title, is the
large inset view of an industrious beaver colony in
the vicinity of Niagara Falls.""
