CJ, a tip: the trick used in Latin America both at the upper and lower 
eschelons of income ( to keep privacy at either end) is to always mark the 
lowest key of income available. This staves you from confessing, be it to 
too much, or to too little--strangely enough, the fillout of these 
questionnaires has generated a rare form of continental parity.

And yes, you´re right. It is rude to ask it as prerequisite. Don´t give them 
food for demographics. Mark the lowest income option.

I´m sorry you had to go through that--I´ve had to, very often, too, to the 
same frustrating conclusions.
