re Playboy Japan interview

To my knowledge, Playboy Japan editors have twice responded to people
seeking to establish the authenticity of the Pynchon interview, both times
they have affirmed its authenticity and declined to provide further
details. Privately, Playboy Japan editors have said that the reporter who
conducted the interview was somebody who had previously established some
association with Pynchon. The original interview transcript has not
apparently been published, so the version I have provided for Pynchon-L is
a retranslation into English from the Japanese version published in the
magazine.  Pynchon himself has not, apparently, made any public statement
or legal move to distance himself from the remarks as published in Playboy
Japan -- strong evidence of its authenticity.
