Given the Church's bloody record as handmaiden to Empire around the world,
it's hardly a surprise to find the Church's representatives so often
reviled and even persecuted. But, the Church is no monolith.  The same
institution that supplies chaplains to minister to men as they go into
battle to make the world safe for capitalists (as Pynchon notes in GR) also
provides tools which can enable spiritual liberation at the individual and
planetary level, if the teachings of Jesus (love your neighbor; feed the
hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked; etc.) are taken seriously
and applied to daily life.
