I should have added that I don't think this necessarily excludes an allusion
to Nietzsche and the horse as Kai suggests. If Pynchon was indeed familiar
with the Nietzsche story, which doesn't seem like much of a stretch, I can
imagine his authorial glee when he came across the story of Dixon and the
slave-driver...
