CAMARA de LOBOS, Portugal -- IS there a wine with a worse reputation than Madeira? Since World War II, winemakers have flooded stores the world over with jug-quality plonk, reducing an ancient, noble wine to little more than a kitchen accessory, a flavoring that added a whiff of butterscotch to countless creamy sauces, soups and casseroles. 
But now, the vineyards here on Madeira, a volcanic island 500 miles from Morocco, are producing better wines than they have in years. Wine shops and bars in North America are making room for the finest Madeiras, something they have not done for decades. In fact, after a century of setbacks, the only thing standing in the way of Madeira's re-entrance into respectable society in the United States is its sorry reputation.
