I agree it's an interesting comparison, and it wouldn't surprise me if
Pynchon expected readers to make this leap, but equating this "Polaris"
with the nuclear-tipped missile of the same name would seem to require the
same sort of leap of faith, absent specific textual support for the jump
from star to missile, that you've called unjustified when Hollander and
others do it with proper names in Pynchon's text.  Not that there's
anything wrong with being inconsistent, of course.
