Cherrycoke would appear to describe at least part of the gaming action at
the bottom of p. 422, "So they cheat" so no need to add anything to
Pynchon's text here.

Cherrycoke's observation re the hypocrisy of some Christians who consider
gambling a sin but at the same time  invest in speculative business
ventures (p. 423)has a very contemporary ring to it, both in the pre-'97
period when Pynchon was writing M&D, and in the current Enron era.  The
"Laws of Leverage" on 423 might extend the comparison.

423.4 "Damme, he owes us twenty pounds,-- more!" Even though Pynchon chose
not to write about it explicitly in the text I believe that, considering the
contextual details, it's safe to assume that Mason lost over twenty pounds
at the gaming tables.
