P.S. to all:

I don't know if this has been posted earlier in the MDDM but 'The Internet
Library of Early Journals' has a whole heap of periodicals scanned onto the
web, available for easy, free access, not even pdf so they don't take long
to view.

The ones of most interest are Gentleman's Magazine, Philosophical
Transactions of the Royal Society (obviously) and perhaps Annual Register.
All of these journals focus on the period M&D covers, so even just for the
sake of periodicizing the darn thing, they're fun to browse. Searchable too.

Of most interest might be Volume 52 of the Philosophical Transactions of the
Royal Society under Nevil Maskelyne; a volume which also contains many
sections on the Transit of Venus, clocks, St Helena, Bradley, electricity,
etc.
