Have you rented a tape of "the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"? It might tell
you something not only about the Barthelme book in question but also a
little about the "In the Zone" section of Gravity's Rainbow.

It is also fun to watch old movies, especially Russian and German
silent films -- except for Metropolis, which to be honest is pretty
boring.

Try Eisenstein's "Alexander Nevski"
