what I find missing from Don B. and DFW for that matter is some sense of 
surrealistic absurd and funny as heck terror, as in the works of my hero, 
Robert Coover.  It's really hard in fiction today to write truly 
disturbingly funny stories with an edge, that remains shocking.  Much of 
Coover's work, tho one could criticize some efforts as clever or futzing 
around with structure, still remain to me quite original and very rich in 
local color shall I say.
Sure folks like DeLillo deal with dread and terror but it's more a statement 
of terror, not the evocation of same.

(by the way Delillo has a new story in this week's New Yorker titled 
Baader-Meinhof--god, DD is turning into rick moody who wants to be john 
cheever or something)
