Franklin as PT Barnum? Mobility as suckers (or, worse, cattle)? Very
Machiavellian, no? But, as Terrance would point out, the underlying
desirous power is miraculous, and thus Religious. This desire for divine
revelation is most definitely a yearning in Pynchon's fictional world, and
it seems connected with a desire to be submissive.
