Now that I look at this, I recall reading that
"heretics" line when that letter was printed ...
"Our thanks to you and to Marianne Wiggins for
recalling those of us who write to our duty as
heretics, for reminding us again that power is as much
our sworn enemy as unreason, for making us all look
braver, wiser, more useful than we often think we are.
We pray for your continuing good health, safety and
lightness of spirit."
... and, yeah, I believe that was Pynchon's. There's
a message missing on that NYT page. 28 signatories,
but only 27 signatures. And note that Pynchon's name
is the only one not italicized. Can't locate quickly
who's missing, but I'm surprised Pynchon didn't show
up later in the NYRB letter as well ...

Now what were we saying about the Times? Reminds me
of a comment Michael Parenti (Inventing Reality
[q.v.]) ...
http://www.michaelparenti.org/
... made to the effect that the most frightening thing
about those "Corrections" the Times prints every day
being the implication that everything else the paper
prints is indisputibly true. Will alert the Ministry
of Truth (er, Minitrue) ...
