The pale logic of evidence suggests that not only was
the emergence (if I may be so bold) of consciousness and
the developement of culture, relatively recent, but also,
occurred quite quickly.

Looking back over the available evidence- the big picture-
one tends to notice, given the benefit of 20-20 hindsight,
patterns. Even in those species whose checks have been
cancelled (for? Insufficient Funds?) a definite trend toward 
increasing complexity can be discerned. 

At this point, again, with one eye toward the past, some
have been tempted to look up and proclaim "oh my God!"
Others, less sanguine about the uniqueness of our own
species, are prone to "revise" the story a bit, and assume
a more objective posture w/r/t to the meaning of it all-
perhaps implicitly harboring some sort of faith in the power 
of technology. 

In the "wall-to-wall rewrite" it should be noted, religion and
technology, at their inception, might be one and the same-
connected, somehow, by their mother tongue.
