Hi all,
I am new, and IÕve been just cruising through Pynchon sites so forgive me if
I break any etiquette rules. Just wanted to point out a coincidence (what
else, when talking about TP writing). The number 86 might have been a code
word for the supplies clerks and bartenders but it also has a profound
significance in Hebrew numerology. It is a numerical value (gematria ) for
one of the names of God, Elohim. According to kabbalists this name refers
to the aspect of God responsible for the creation, and also signifying
separation and division, since creation has been viewed as carving out of
identifiable entities form the undifferentiated primal chaos. Number 87
corresponds to an expression beli-ma, that can be literally translated
"without anything". Coincidence.
