Raison d'etre

Maybe I'm misreading these posts, but it seems to me that p-listers have
all assumed that the publication of the book and the writing of the
introduction was Pynchon's idea. From what I remember, his publishers
were upset about the fact that all of his short stories were bootlegged.
That and the fact that he hadn't handed over a manuscript in over ten
years. Rumors were thick that Pynchon was deep into alcoholism and would
never come out with another book. Most people at the SL was published
felt that Pynchon wrote the intro under duress. Far from a desire to
share what he had learned from writing these stories, he wrote the intro
due to an obligation to his publishers. As such, these words do not
really deserve some of the analysis they have received so far.
