Indeed. What strikes me is the sense of regret and the
lack of blame as Pynchon looks back at that "failure
of college workers to get together politically" -- a
far cry from the way some Pynchon readers use this
Intro to try to demonstrate that Pynchon blames the
"new left" for that failure or castigate them for it
or leap from these statementsto the conclusion that
his political sympathies lie elsewhere.  The closest
Pynchon comes to assessing blame is "One reason was
the presence of real, invisible class force fields" --
apparently, in '84, class differences loom large in
his understanding recent history. And I'm willing to
bet next year's pay that P still understands the class
forces that -- just to name one such possibility that
sometimes weighs heavily on my mind -- would let Bush
and Cheney and the rest of those chickenhawks send a
bunch of less fortunate young men and women to die
(and kill innocent civilians in the process) for their
right to profit from oil and arms sales in a war on
Iraq.
