I read it that he's saying that there were class barriers "in the way of"
(i.e. obstructing) communication between the two groups. A great many of the
student radicals were from wealthy middle-class and upper-class families (as
Pynchon was). The other criticism he makes (bottom of p.9) has to do with
the ageism which was implicit in the Beat and hippie movements, which also
excluded and alienated many of the "blue-collar" left.
