But then he doesn't say it would be wrong to begin with a theme, symbol or
other abstract unifying agent and NOT FORCE characters and events to conform
to it. Maybe the characters and events WANT to conform? Then it would not be
"simply wrong."
Or maybe he means that the characters and events have to come first, and then
themes, symbols, and abstract unifying agents can rightly be added, or forced
into them.
But as you say, quality of writing is not wholly subjective. Some things are
"simply wrong."
Is that clear?
