My wife read this sentence and it made perfect sense
to her. She has no idea what a Pynchon is. 

S: "Lucy, read this." 

L: so? 

S: Those? 

L: The Whites. 

S: Us? 

L: Us, stupid. 


THOSE equals White America. 

US equals people of color.
