"It wasn't till 'Under the Rose' (1959) that I coudl
bring myself, even indirectly, to credit guidebook
eponym Karl Baedeker, whose guide to Egypt for 1899
was the major 'source' for the story.
"I spotted this book in the Cornell Co-op....
Could I, even as I laid down cash for it as the cash
register, have been subconsciously planning to loot
this faded red volume for the contents of a story?
"Could Willy Sutton rob a safe? Loot the Baedeker
I did, all the details of a time and place I had never
been to, right down to the names of the diplomatic
corps. Who's make up a name like
Khevenhüller-Metsch?" (SL, "Intro," p. 17)
Karl Baedeker
180159, German publisher, founder of the Baedeker
guidebooks. His printing establishment was at Koblenz,
but his son Fritz, who continued the business, moved
it to Leipzig. Printed in several languages, the
guidebooks provided valuable historical information
and ran into many editions, especially for European
countries. Although the firms files were destroyed
during World War II, the business was revived after
the war by a great-grandson of Baedeker. In 1950 the
firm began publishing automobile touring guides.
