A while ago, I referred to a passage from Carold Polsgrove's book about
Esquire, "It Wasn't Pretty Folks, but Didn't We Have Fun?" (2001). The
passage had to do with an anecdote about how agent Candida Donadio seemed
able to read her writers' minds, Pynchon's included. Here's another
reference to Donadio (c. October 1969) that may shed light on her
understanding of Pynchon:
[Michael] Herr was living with Valerie Elliott, who worked for Herr's agent,
Candida Donadio. Elliott would say to Donadio, "He doesn't write, he
doesn't write anything." And Donadio would say, "You must understand,
writers spend *years* thinking. They just spend years thinking and
thinking." (pp. 211-212)
