Saw it today. Neither a remake of Tarkovsky's film
(though not entirely unreminiscent of it, or 2001, for
that matter, either) nor a straight(er) adaptation of
Lem's novel (which has never been translated in its
entirety in English, to begin with; we get a trans. of
an abridged French trans, apparently). Smart of
Soderbergh not to attempt the former, annoying of him
not to attempt the latter, esp. given that the state
of the art in SFX is rather more advanced here, now,
than it was in the early 70s USSR. But the rerealse
of teh augmented Tarkovsky film will at least be in
Chicago after the new year, so ... on the other hand,
I unambiguously and outright enjoyed Eight Crazy Days.
Not only are the best musicals these days
(non-Disney) cartoons (thinking the South Park movie
here), but now two of my favorite films this year star
Adam Sandler. The end is nigh ...
