Another thread in "The Small Rain" that becomes
stronger as Pynchon's fiction evolves over the year --
 life lived through the parameters of the media:

Levine's "whore book" (p 30), later identified as
_Swamp Wench_ (the sort of porno novel one could find,
in the relatively innocent late 50s and 60s, in Dad's
closet, or the closet of a buddy's father -- those
paperbacks with their lurid covers are collectible
now)

Rizzo's _Being and Nothingness_ and _Form and Value in
Modern Poetry_ 

Levine and Buttercup:
"a _McCall's_ togetherness [...] It sounds like a
caption in _Life_. In the midst of _Life._ "  (after
seeing the _Life_ photographers at work earlier)
