What strikes me about the first two pages of ASR is the
unbroken continuity. What a gift this is- for those of us
who like to sit around and jam. This is not polished, thank
god. Something clean may yet emerge here, something
worthwhile might assert itself. This is good shit. If not?
So what...
Speaking of continuity, syncopated or not, there is the
matter of reverence. The past, as we Know it, is a matter
of language, the word. The past as we Become it, is a matter
of the way of all flesh. Knowing and Being, like reason and
faith, confronting eachother, dressed and dialed, up for it.
Like the elegant Greek and the rebarbarative Hebrew (not
exactly a cuddly critter) preparing to duke it out over the
future consciousness (dare I say soul?) of Europe.
The Levite is reading when we first encounter him. He looks
pregnant. He has used this opportunity at Ft. Roach to
consume- what we all assume, as he lies in his
room- junk. Junk for the body, and junk for the soul-
Crossin' Jordan, he'll sink like a stone...
I think it is noteworthy that it's Twinkletoes Dugan who
calls it a "whore book." Gone native, in his modified drawl,
when asked for his opinion where the book will end up,
Levine replies, "The G.I. can I reckon," and smiles.
Shit and the word, foax: the letters of the law. That smile
is crucial, if not divine.
The greeks and the hebrews both had letters and they both
had laws. Where did they get them? Who knows, but it takes
two tango, or whatever it is those cagins do...
respectfully
