I've read The Crying of Lot 49 biennially since the
late 70s, the same copy over and over kept in the
greasy pocket of my tattered too-small winndrbreaker, 
standing in subzero blizzard conditions waiting for
the open-air, mule-drawn wagon that takes us to the
coal mine every morning (at 4:00 a.m.) and brings us
home at midnight.  Without the luxury of so much as a
candle ...
