A rumor

John,
I continue to be surprised how some voices here at
Pynchon-L, anonymous and otherwise, continue to
challenge PN's editorial independence, and to slander
me in the process. You'd think the truth -- that you
and your fellow editors use your own judgement to
produce a fine publication -- would suffice. Long-time
readers of Pynchon-L will know that I pass along the
occasional bibliographic item to PN, and for that
reason am proud to be named on the list of
contributors.
The situation is, not surprisingly, not quite as jbor
describes -- somebody called "cathyramirez69" came
onto Pynchon-L recently, insulting several of us,
without provocation. One of the insults from
cathyramirez69 was that I somehow tried to influence
Pynchon Notes regarding the publication of Rob's
article. jbor is correct to call it a "flame war," I
guess, although the flames were all moving in one
direction: from cathyramirez69 towards myself and
other targets.
Regarding jbor's comments, I guess it's really not
surprising, since that time I publicly scolded him for
his nasty public hounding of Pynchon Notes
contributor, Charles Hollander, which included
offlist harassment (together with other people who
continue to post almost daily to the P-list) and
rumor-mongering about the possiblity that we
(Hollander and myself) had hacked into jbor's PC down
in Australia, or some such nonsense. I believe you
were still reading Pynchon-L on a regular basis at
that time, and may recall this unfortunate incident.
I recall it now only to add context to the slur
against me that jbor has chosen to add to that of
"cathyramirez69". I'm sorry that jbor can't focus
more energy on reading Pynchon and writing about it,
instead of attacking people within the Pynchon
scholarly community the way he does.
Keep up the good work -- Pynchon Notes remains a
must-read, a publication I look forward to reading and
re-reading.
