You haven't been spending any time in the D.C area, by
any chance? Just kidding. But... blanket statements and
all- sometimes carry unwanted passengers along for the
ride, and given the chilly amoral climate of some of those
texts, who mightn't be tempted to wrap up in one, bring
it back to the Tee Pee, if you catch my drift. But I'm not
sure...

Thing that bothers me most about your formulation is
that above/below schtick. I'm not sure there isn't
something a little more in the middle that can't be
predicted from high or low- a little "magic" supervening
(meta-vening?)- something unexpected, at any rate.
