Lots of free-floating anxiety about giant electronic
brains floating around back then -- I watched the
movie "Desk Set" ('57, Tracy & Hepburn) again
recently, where the scary, job-stealing computer turns
out to be Cupid instead. I wonder why Pynchon pulled
back from the Minstrel Island project -- given his
tendency to flesh out in fiction the little-known and
arcane, perhaps he felt he had tapped into something a
bit too mainstream -- no way to know for sure, unless
he decides to talk about it, I guess.
