The Gaddis people seem rather down on Franzen for the New Yorker piece. 
An overreaction I think. Despite Franzen's admission he never finished 
JR he nevertheless demonstrated a rather strong  knowledge of the ouvre 
in general. He is definitely a Gaddis reader,  which should be 
appreciated in itself.
