American thoughts I wrote while in the midst of the 5th heat wave and about
Chapter 55 of M&D this summer just past:

America Is Such A Road Movie

Especially in summer. So many hot
Bodies encased in egg cars, hot yolks
Of people bustling from interstate to shore
To grandma's house (the dreaded barbecue)
To nowhere but in circles seeking girls
In tank tops and miniature shorts…
You see bald heads all proud in hot
Convertibles, you see bare feet out
Windows from un-air-conditioned shells,
You see the children squabbling and
Front seat parents sweating out their vows
While envying the circling guys, the baldy
Heads, the big rig drivers going somewhere
Very, very far away from here…
I saw a pretty girl sunbathing in a pickup bed
And everyone on every lane around her
Did a double triple take-her bra straps slipped
And all the highway breaths inhaled at once.
America is such a road movie, seen from inside
Moving glass, as fractious and prismatic
As a tricolor kaleidoscope…young toys for
Childlike kingdoms. I like it here, but then
I'm hot and awfully childish.
