Yes, mayhap sometime.
It's probably safe to say that most subscribers sign up on this list
expecting a Pynchon discussion. Among the totality of subscribers, a
certain number has been taking advantage of the freedom to go off-topic,
sending messages that are "inappropriate" by the standards of many. The
more that off-topic and "inappropriate" messages dominate the list, the less
satisfying the group is likely to be to those who come to pynchon-l for its
distinctive focus on Pynchon-related topics, causing subscribers to drop
out, cut down on their participation, or send off-topic and "inappropriate"
messages themselves.
Self-restraint among the posters of the off-topic and "inappropriate"
messages would probably bring Pynchon into focus here again. And I daresay
it would probably enable everyone to apply their energies in more
interesting, productive, and healthy ways--ways that might be of tremendous
benefit to all of humanity!
STOP THE FLAME WARS!
This has been a public service announcement provided by d.
PS: I did a quick web search to find a dimly-remembered item saying
something to the effect that references to such subjects as Ayn Rand and sf
vs. sci-fi were guaranteed to start flame-fests. But so far I've found
nothing.
