This isn't very deep. Textile mills in the Northeast paying subsistence
wages to underage immigrant women to process cotton grown and harvested with
slave labor in the south.
Capital not spent on wages freed to invest in railroads and expansionism.
Capital not spent on wages freed to fund a military necessary to subdue an
armed aboriginal people.
Industrial north and agrarian south playing European markets against each
other.
One hundred and thirty-eight years is not that long a time in historical
perspective to discount the effects of slavery.
What am I missing?
