and the response, a new wave of struggle against the Bomb would emerge
fiercely committed to the survival of Humanity, it would grow into a far
larger, more influential movement than in the past. this new movement
in the new millennium would mobilize mass marches in dozens of
countries, launch startling campaigns of civil disobedience, galvanize a
generation of youthful idealists, generate a surge of women's peace
activism, unite greens and the workers, spawn peace parties and
candidates, rally the support of the world's intellectuals, empty the
houses of worship into the streets, and carry the struggle for
disarmament into second and third and fourth corners of the world.
riding a new tide of popular outrage about the irresponsible
proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction, the movement would have a
significant impact upon the leaders of nations.
indeed, hard-pressed by the rising demand for banning the Bomb, the
leaders of the great powers would declare a new moratorium on the
development and testing of WMD and, eventually, negotiate arms control
agreements. Once again, the unprecedented peril of destruction by the
Bomb would inspire an unprecedented popular response--one of great moral
and political power.
