Wellstone's Sons Tell Cheney: Don't Attend Service!

Vice President Dick Cheney scrapped plans to attend a memorial service 
Tuesday for a senator killed in a plane crash as Democrats and Republicans 
wrangled over politicking for the dead man's senate seat less than a week 
from elections. 

Cheney canceled plans to attend the tribute to Democratic Senator Paul 
Wellstone at the request of Wellstone's family, White House spokesman Scott 
Stanzel said. 

Wellstone's two sons were "appreciative," of Cheney's offer to attend, but 
respectfully declined, Stanzel said, declining to comment on the reason for 
what was seen as a political snub. US Health and Human Services Secretary 
Tommy Thompson will represent the administration at the service instead, 
Stanzel said. 

The vigil for the popular two-term senator, who perished along with his wife, 
daughter and three staffers in a plane crash in a remote part of Minnesota 
last Friday, was expected to draw 20,000 people.
