How I wish I had taken German instead of French in college. I'm still
interested in substantial Pynchon topics! I enjoyed Otto's post about
Daniel du Prie's post-structuralist essay about Vineland. I don't
always agree with (or understand) all lit crit, but it's fun to read.
(This is despite my allbutdiploma Masters degree in English. I'm from
the ooooold close reading school, but I know I need to modernize myself)
Anyway, the du Prie article got me interested in rereading John Barth's
End of the Road (which was never one of my favorites of his; but I think
now I need to reconsider it.) which certainly features a sinister
doctor. (Played by James Earl Jones in the obscure movie, apparently.)
I'm interested in the Menippean aspects of TRP: how his works are
encyclopedic and encompass the entire world. (Joyce is like this too of
course, but much less political) This is why there should be so many
fascinating things to write about on the list. I worry that everybody
else has already gone over everything, and I missed it. Alas.
