Doug, Barbara, and Spam

Just a note about the latest flaming:

The reason I no longer post angry letters to and about Doug is that I found
it ultimately to be just a big waste of time. Now I basically delete most of
his NP posts unread, and I have to say, I rue the fact the list is STILL so
convulsed about him. His annoying habits are so blatantly obvious, I just
don't think it's worth the effort any more to counteract his venom, whether
it comes in pure vitriolic form or insinuating ooze form. And besides, he's
been fairly nice to me lately, so what's the point? I just wish sometimes
everyone would only IGNORE his inflammatory rhetoric and only respond to his
posts about Pynchon.

As for Barbara, I talked to her offlist for awhile back in the day, and I
for one am quite convinced she's genuine. Despite my confusion at her Doug
worship and my disagreement with most of her opinions, she seems real enough
to me, and I am still grateful that she shared her husband's views of Iran
and Saudi Arabia with me -- it was quite eye-opening.

As for spam: I, too, have been getting much nonsensical spam and strange
messages lately, and my IP claims it is NOT a virus. No one else I know gets
this stuff -- except for other members of the P-List. Still, I don't think
it's a conspiracy, I just wonder if we all we enrolled on some weird spam
engine.
