no more hate mail, please

Terrance,
Just stop writing posts that feature me as the victim of beatings, rapes,
homicide, etc., and things will be fine. It's easy enough to ignore the
other things you write on Pynchon-L.
Rather than let your distortions and lies, posted earlier today, stand
unchallenged, I reiterate my requests to you. I hope the list owner will
see this in that light, and not interpret it as an attack on you -- I had
to leave to take care of some business while the list owner's email came in
on Pynchon-L, but I'm going to send this anyway. If not, so be it.
I ask you never to telephone me again, and to stop sending your hate mail
to my email box. I can't stop your spewing on Pynchon-L, of course. Since
you know where I live, if you continue with the hate mail and threatening
messages, I will do what I have to do to make sure our home here does not
become the scene of some stalker tragedy. Call me paranoid if you will, or
worse, but I'll take the chance of over-reacting if it prevents you from
following through on your violent fantasies about me. I have a family to
consider as well. You have a reputation as an unpredictable and unstable
person; knowing that, I feel justified in taking these actions, no matter
what a handful of misguided P-listers might have to say about them -- it
may be, as some people say, that you are no more than a nuisance, and it
may be that you have crossed the line and represent a different kind of
potential, I don' know, I'm not taking any chances.
You also might want to consider not making other P-listers the focus of
your violent fantasies as well. In particular, I've heard that your ugly
misogyny makes it unpleasant for some women to take part in the Pynchon-L
discussion.
I don't expect there will be any more OFFLIST email between us -- that is,
if you honor my many requests and stop sending me email directly -- so
there won't be any need to hope that you might keep that OFFLIST and spare
yourself further embarrassment.
You appear to be as disturbed and unpredictable as you were on the phone
when you called me -- perhaps more so -- and as I have heard you described
by several other people. I urge you to get the help you need, and to stop
harassing and threatening me. Because we have had a personal connection
in the past, I do hope that you manage to work through whatever it is that
causes you to fantasize about raping, beating, killing the people you
interact with on Pynchon-L and elsewhere. That you persist in calling that
sort of extreme behavior jokes or word play strikes me as pathetic. (The
same goes for your fellow participants in that sort of "word play" on
Pynchon-L.)
The people who applaud your behavior on Pynchon-L might wish to reconsider
what they want to encourage, but I don't expect that tiny -- and,
ultimately, insignificant -- contingent to do so.
I do apologize if anything I have posted on Pynchon-L in the past has
contributed in any way to your present behavior. At the same time, you
appear to have the ability to control your actions when you choose to do
so, so I'm happy to let you be responsible for what you choose to do and
say from now on.
On to SLSL. I observe you didn't sign up to host a session, and I hope
your contribution doesn't continue to be more of the same vile fantasies
you have written about me. Post as much Melville as you like, however,
he's a favorite author of mine, even if you never do manage to make any
sort of intelligible or convincing connection between the huge Melville
passages you post and Pynchon's text -- although you may also wish to join
Ishmail or another online Melville discussion group to discuss Melville's
work. Ishmail is not likely to welcome your assault and rape fantasies,
however, judging from the discussion among that group.
Sincerely,
Doug Millison
P.S. In a separate email which I will not post here, I told "Monica
Belevan" there was no need for her to withdraw from Pynchon-L, I said the
same thing to "her" (if indeed the person using that anonymous @hotmail
email account to post to me and to Pynchon-L has anything to do with an
actual Monica Belevan somewhere, and isn't just the latest in the series of
hoaxes that you and others have played out on Pynchon-L; I heard from "her"
offlist just minutes after receiving one of your offlist emails to me
today) that I say to you: just stop making me the object of violent
fantasies on Pynchon-L, don't send me any hate mail, and we'll have no
further cause for action.
