And I should note that I cut out from the middle of that last passage 
another hypothesis explaining the ubiquity of the White Whale:

related in old times of the inland Strello mountain in Portugal (near whose 
top there was said to be a lake in which the wrecks of ships floated up to 
the surface); and that still more wonderful story of the Arethusa fountain 
near Syracuse (whose waters were believed to have come from the Holy Land by 
an underground passage); these fabulous narrations are almost fully equalled 
by the realities of the whaleman."

So we are given two options for the White Whale's supposed ubiquity:

1. Scientific:  The White Whale is travelling in tunnels through the center 
of the earth (which should ring a bell with the current reading of MD)

2. Supernatural:  The White Whale supercedes Time and Space via immortality.
