I suggest from personal experience that you start with his best, _Gravity's 
Rainbow_.  It's were I started, and its the best one, so why delay the best 
experience?  Pynchon is not hard to read, only hard to synthesize.  But for 
the first time you should focus on the fun, the sensual, and on whatever 
catches your fancy.  Don't try to maintain the control of "understanding" as 
a true acid-head would tell you.  Just let go and read it.
